Wednesday Webinar: Becoming an International CMU Student
And one of our cats got a really really loud per.
Oh, I've heard cats like that. They're just so strange.
Well, she sounds like a bird when she purred.
Yes.
A bird.
That's so weird.
Yeah yeah, like she's got this weird subtle chirp when she purrs. It's quite interesting.
Another person is joined on here.
Oh
Claudia
OK, I can't see that.
Where is.
It's an there's a participants tab on the side.
Oh, OK.
Yeah, mine's not only showing you and me, but I'm glad to have anybody else with us, so that's great.
Yeah, as as people join a vacuous know where they're coming from um in in the chat. And uh, then other the other participants can know, kind of where everybody's coming on.
So I don't know she's oh **** actually on it.
Ah, I think there might be a.
I think as Daniel explained it to me that when people sign up they can jump on, but it isn't until actually 9:00 o'clock they actually.
OK.
It actually starts for them so.
Yeah OK, I can see, uhm that there are three participants, but I can only see yours and my name's. So I think that might be some of the.
OK.
Like ownership.
Yeah, you should have on the ownership.
No, I can't see anything except yours in my name.
OK.
Yeah, I don't know.
Yeah.
Hello.
Some.
I'm glad I got.
Yeah.
Oh there. Now it just, oh it's Claudia.
I know Claudia.
So.
Yeah, I was glad that I was able to get my email it this morning because she I think she emailed me last night. Ask the time difference.
Oh well, yeah, that's always a bit of a challenge, right?
Yeah.
And then I mean, that's the reason why we're doing the web at this early in the morning. It's because.
The time difference.
A time time differences and it's like if we were to do it in the middle of the afternoon, it's like that's 9:10 o'clock at night for some people so.
No, it's not helpful.
Yeah, I mean the earlier it is for us. Normally for the rest of the world it's earlier in the afternoon for.
Yeah.
So.
Yep.
Yeah, I hope people are not having trouble getting on 'cause for certain what like 2 three minutes.
Yeah.
Kay?
But that.
Seeing that we have four participants now, but I don't know who the other person is yet.
So yeah, as people are coming on, if you just want to type in the chat, uh, hello, let us know where you're coming from. That would be great.
And then we'll probably start it around.
905 is kind of the start time.
Mature video is breaking up a little bit.
Do you have?
Your Ethernet plugged in or.
Yep.
OK.
No.
A simple same thing happened to Danielle, Uh, when we.
Did.
OK.
Prior, uhm?
It's it's clear on my end like.
Kay?
So I don't.
Yeah, 'cause I'm seeing a little bit of a leg.
So just I think we might just need to be aware of that that even the voice might leg a little bit for participants.
Right.
OK, do you want me to jump off for now and then I'll pop back on.
Sure.
OK, just see if it clears it up a little bit.
KI'm starting in about uh.
Now if you.
Uh if you could uh still in the chat so that people are working that would be great just let us know.
Are you coming from and that would be uh let's know also that the chat is working?
There you are.
OK.

Hello. I'm Boiphin
Klaudia Kola
09:05:56 AM
Hi, I am from Albania
Alright I.
About nine people registered for the for the event, but it looks like we just had two are are here joining us. So um, in order for us to get through these this, we were going to be starting, so I'll welcome to the first international web and R.
Hum.
You can see here, uh, I muted, but if you have questions or if you want anything you can use that function and that will be larger in that if you have any specific questions. I know that both of you, both of the pressure now, are both applicants. I know if you have specific questions about your specific application, it would be better to send me an email and to send that way and step through the chat. If you're having a hard time hearing there is a closed captioning button at the top of your screen.
I believe and you can click on that that there will be some believe log of web and R.
There is with all technology that glitches. So if things that starts going a little crazy.
It is also my first presentation I have done in about four years, so it might be a little rusty, so Please be patient with me. BANED links that we might be suggesting this present also be provided in a pediatric. We will send out to you at the end the webinar.
So let's just get started come my name is Mitch, I've been working. I print in the picture I'm working at seeing you for about 15 years now and I've been working primarily in enrollment. I started off as a as an enrollment admissions counselor.
And doing rivets in that coming and then I have now moved into the ignition square position. So I basically.
All the transcripts and I work speed with all the international students, so that's why I'm here and you most likely have sent me a email machines and have heard from me.
Yeah, so little bit of me. I do have a guy from seeing you and be from University. I'm very active. Peter and everything.
And a little bit about me if I'm just a little, you might look at every once in awhile, vocalize the most during the presentation. I do not have control of my cats I have and that makes sometimes they hear like environment anyway. But it is also said Lucky.
Uh, quite some time now and I work in admissions and send or life. And so I'm gonna let standard take it away here a little bit.
Alright, welcome to becoming an international student at CMU International student web and R. This is also my first web and R and so I'm really, really excited to do this. My name is Sandra Lucky as as much already introduced me, I am the coordinator of international student programs. Here I had to.
At CMU I have been in this position for about 10 years. I've been in student life for about 19, so I have lots of experience working with the University students and it's just one of the wonderful things that I get to do every day. My background is in. I have a Masters in student development, so actually working with University age students.
And just a little bit about CMU and our international student programs. We have approximately 100 international students. Over the last couple of years.
In both our graduate and her undergraduate programs here at CMU, we have students from at least 35 different countries. Every year that of course changes the demographics each year, and so there's like just a huge variety among the students an it's just such a joy to get to know each of you as you come in and to get to know a little bit about who you are as an individual, but also it just gives us an opportunity to kind of understand a little bit about where you come from, where your country or culture, and so that's just a really great opportunity. And we just.
Are really appreciative when you choose us to come and do your post secondary education. So just a little bit.
Of explanation about kind of where I fit in this process, Mitch does all the recruitment. He will answer all of your questions through your application process an your visa process and all of those things. I usually start getting connected with.
Students, once they start planning or once they had their their deposit and their study permit, and so that means you're most likely going to make it to CMU. Once you have those two things in place.
So I really kind of start providing support for international students as they arrive in Canada and begin to engage in life and academics here, so this could include introducing you to timbits, which when you come will give you some of those and answering the question too. What's a tooney, which that's a $2 coin?
And also to talking to students about their homesickness.
And about confusion that comes with moving to a new country. So those are some of the things that I provide as a part of the programming here at CMU and just really looking forward to welcome you to our campus. Possibly this fall. More likely this winter. So really looking forward to chatting with you this morning.
Thanks Sandra.
So I see that there's some new participants have joined us um we have to start it here just a reminder that this is a.
Overview of becoming a international student at CMU for undergraduates do you have graduate programs but an you're welcome to stay in this presentation but there will be more information to uh for anybody didn't graduate graduate studies.
This will give you basic view of kind of this by steps to become a good student are a little bit different than for other groups.
So uh we didn't live introduction so uh those latecomers like missed a little bit uh once again my name is Mitch I work with the international student admissions.
So this is basically what what the outline of What Car today a little bit about who CMU is what you can study here and then we're going to go through the student from start so somebody maybe it's already so you don't have some of the steps that something might be from your checking it out so we're actually going to start with steps from number one to the last before actually starting to be a student here for a little bit of tuition fees 'cause I know there's going to be lots of questions at the financial support that we have.
And then we will open up wide or any of the questions that you have and readable over those questions. I'm sending the check we can get to all by the end. We know a little bit more about who is Canadian Mennonite Unity and I'm going to get a standard join in. And maybe you can share a little bit more about who is made in minute University.
Absolutely. I think one of the things that we run into the most that students asked the question. They see the name Canadian Mennonite University in. First of all, I think a lot of people do ask like what is a Mennonite but we won't get into that today. But one of the big questions is do I need to be a Mennonite to study at CMU? And we want to tell you emphatically.
No, you do not need to be a Mennonite. We are a faith based University. We are committed to our Christian Mennonite traditions and part of that is part of that. Heritage leads us to providing education that includes a core of Bible and theology courses for all students, but we do not limit our admission to only Mennonites.
For Christians, we accept students from all faith backgrounds. You are welcome to come and study here an explore our faith as well as your own. Through the context that CMU provides an just to kind of give you a bit of a sense of that. What that means is that when you graduate from CMU, you will have taken a core of Bible and theology courses as part of your degree, regardless of which.
Discipline or area of study. You will take some Bible and theology. We won't get into the details of that. That's something that you can talk about with your admissions counselor at a later date. One of the other things though out of our faith based.
Tradition is that we want to care for you as a whole person. You are not only studying, we recognize that you are an entire human being and we want to care for you in that way. And so before I said I work in the student life to Department at CMU and that Department is charged with the care in support of.

I'm from Sierra Leone
Being of students as they study here, so we just to give you a bit of an example of what that might mean is we're going to provide programs in several different areas, and just going to quickly run over what those would be is we provide we want to care for your physical health. We want to make sure that you stay fit that you stay healthy that you can participate in athletics that you can have access to our fitness room and then we can also help you connect with health care.
If you have other physical needs, we also care about your spiritual life and so through that we provide programming in what we call community gatherings. So there are chapels which are not mandatory. We provide opportunities for worship and we provide opportunities for fellowship groups and so those are all things that happen outside of the classroom.
We also care about your social life. We know that we as human beings are social people. We need to be around other people. This is a weird time to be talking about that as we are in this physical distancing with this pandemic. But it is important that we have a we have social connections and that just helps with our well being and so student life will provide supports through campus activities and campus events and helping you get connected with it activities and people.
In the larger Winnipeg community as well, we also recognize that you are here to get a degree, and so we provide lots of help, provide lots of academic support such as tutoring. We also have a group called pal which is pure assisted learning where students help other students be better students, and so it's a really great opportunity for connection as well as academic help. And then Lastly, we care about the emotional well being and.
Um, emotional health of all of our students and so that for international students particularly has a lot to do with cultural adaptation. Making connections with people. If you need counseling services, we would also provide that. And so just so you know that as you come here to get a degree, CMU is also committed to your personal well being and will try to help and support you the best you can as you make the adjustment both to life in Canada.
And pursuing a degree in, uh, in another country so much, I'm going to invite you to come back and continue on.
Thank you, yes, uh, we we brought up the.
I think Mitch is coming. There we go.
Oh hi there, uh, yeah, so you might ask the question of what can I study at CMU? Uhm, there are 19 different degree programs within The Bachelor of Arts. There is a Bachelor business Bachelor of Science in Biology, General Sciences and math, and Bachelor of music with five different concentrations. And like I said, This is all under which we do have graduate studies at NYU.
You're interested in that. You can continue studies for after your batch of art is not that we continue to undergraduate program, or maybe you're interested studies. The process is like I said, the process is a bit different to becoming a graduate student that seem to have that. We hope you out in the future have a webinar about that, more specifically about studies.
So things, if you know specifically what kind of free programs you can go to, um, because our website that academics tab and it'll align all the different programs.
Um?
Come, it seems you and like I said, a sum, uh, every participating is point coming in at a different time. In this process you like checking it out for the first time. You might be an application might already be well on your way to for a student permit, or you might already have a super late. I don't know.
So we're starting right for the game. So the first thing that we suggest is before you apply is the check out the requirements. We have a requirement age off of the website that you can check on. You can check the requirements based on your your own country. These requirements have been researched them to try find the best possible representation of country and we've tried to work at the equivalence of what you would need to be able to successfully be student at CMU.
In successfully and do nothing while you're dumb and these are all the minimum grid street in your high schools or in your universities. And then also if your country may require English proficiency exam results. So the first thing you should check out those mode grade requirements after you've done encourage you to apply now concede made our deadline for default intake.
So you may wanna consider August the 10th. The application for the winter end season. Once you have looked at the requirements and ready to fly, we encourage apply online. You can find that our website and a $150 nonrefundable application fee that goes with it which you can pay through a UH-30 site called fly wire. Arrange national payment, go through fly wire. It's the safest way that we get your money. You pay in your.
All ready to fly, why are they will pay us in our current Canadian currency so it is an easy way to once it's a It's. It's the best way for you to get money To to pay senior, so that's how you do that. After you've applied, there are.
So after you have applied you, you provide us with transcripts. Now because of the pandemic we have changed our process for the 2020-2021 years specific. What we require is that first you can send me copies of your transcript and I can use those copies.
Eligibility purposes, so if you send your chance I can remote in and I can say yes you're accepted or no, you need to do similar, but I can use hands to let you know what needs to happen next.
What you need to do is you need to get either your official digital be sent to your from your school directly to me and I can use for a conditional occurrences which that I can send letters that you can store your application for two permits and visas, and then before you can actually start your classes we will need the copy sent directly from your school to me and that would be a male and I do. We do realize that right now it's very difficult for you take those official copies.
Uh, some schools are available for you to contact or screens and will send out official hard copies.
Hum.
Currently, with the situation we're in, contact your school or or education board and ask for digital copies and we will expose on the conditional part is only Additionally something that will do is if you plan on living on campus, we do need a housing education and we also need two housing references. These registered not be coming from a family member. They should never knows you well like Master of teacher employer.
Uhm, you must be sent directly from those people to seem and have them email me. Um and they can seem to come right from the person to me. And then once we do that then we can proceed housing application. So now let's let's say you put your transcript. You provide housing and you've been excited. I will have sent you letters.
So the next question is who needs to update our study? Permit permits are very different than visas, so these let you into the country. Second, allow you to study in the country now to apply for these study. Promise if you're less citizen you need. You still need a complete study permit and you can apply for those in industry encourage or you can apply for those edger port of entry. If your international student who happens to be living in the United States, you still need Canadian study permit.
So you may be studying or living in the United States. Those are American credits. You still need all the permits for Canada now if you're an international student who's living in Canada, you may still need to get these different even though you are in Canada. If you're studying it already, you will have a student permit and what you will need to do is we call the designated Institute switch and that means you just have to change the.
Designa Doradilla line number hasn't been learning stage number, you just need to switch that down with Canadian Immigration, and there is a link on.
A PDF which we went in with instructions on how to do that. If your international student who's living outside Canada, then you need to study permit. So those are the four basic categories. Who needs to get his stuff and where do you ever study permit? Immigration's website is.
Uh, providing links on how to apply for a spectrum. It's a curse that you apply online because the only application could be a lot quicker, but application process than if you were to go to an immigration office in your home country. So and immigration Canada seems to be going very, very briefly to online applications and online forms so.
Yeah, it would be a lot more better than a few to apply online for certain things.
No, I'm going invite. There is the In addition to your study permit. You need to get something called a Co op work permit and there's just going to share a little bit more about that.
Yeah I'm just going to talk a little bit about why you need this.

Hello. I am from ethiopia
And so um as part of your degree at CMU every student is required to complete a practicum you could also think about this as an internship this gives you the opportunity to integrate your academic learning with practical work experience usually this takes place in your second or third year of study at CMU sometimes people do it in the summer some people do it during the school year it depends on.
How you want it a structure that for yourself students are encouraged to find practicum opportunities for themselves this is not something that seemed you will necessarily like just have set up ready for you to go but that's why we do it after you've been here for awhile but you will provide you will be provided assistance in working through the practicum office just so you know some of these are are paid internships but some a lot of them would not be these will probably be unpaid?
Internship just so you know that but that's just and that is just dependent on the individual situation and you'll learn a lot more about this program once you arrive on campus but what I do want to tell you today is about the application process itself you do need to apply for it along side of your study permit there is no extra fee for this permit it does not cost you anything extra.
But the application is also available on the IRC website which Mitch just mentioned one thing that you should note is that they will ask you for a letter from your academic institution stating that.
Hey thanks a lot Sandra Yeah.
OK, so, uh.
This is required by your degree that letter or that information is included in your admission letter so when you were admitted to CMU you will receive a letter from Mitch and you can use that same letter to apply for the Co op work permit so it's not you don't need anything additional it's the same letter of the information is in that letter so just so you know alright I'm going to invite Mitch to come back and just complete.
Another part of the.
Requirements.
I think he's coming back eventually.
There we go. Yeah, no problem.
Thanks a lot for that um so we talked a little bit about permits and and the Co op work permit In addition to a permit you also need travel documents like a temporary residence visa or an ETA the ETA will be dependent on which country you're coming from or the visa will also be these things will be mentioned in the letter that Canadian immigration means you if they accept.
Keep it up if they accept you to receive permit uh the visa or ETA should be indicated in that left just so you know the visa and the Premier 2 different things travel these are the temporary residence or ETA you need either one of those enter into Canada the study permit allows you to study in capital there are 2 different but they usually hand in hand with one another and getting immigration will do will.
Indicator on what you need just say right now any anything regarding immigration in terms of permits or visas or anything like that Canadian Canadian men at University has no influence or control over those decisions those are all committed immigration decisions all we can do is provide the documents that you need to apply for the permit so if.
Canadian immigration makes a decision you need to deal with Nathan immigration on what those decisions are so I just got right right.
I see that there are some questions coming in and just a reminder that we answer questions as they come in at the end of the presentation.

Is there any deadline for our transcript?
So once you have applied you guessed it an even if your uh your permit application still in process there is this is the next step that you have to do to become a senior student is you need to pay international student deposit this is for for students who are coming from different places in the country are different that's already in the world.
The international student 'cause it is 9500 dollars can this is roughly the cost of the semester at CMU and that includes the cost for 4 courses room and board and it's also covers the money for the international health insurance that will cover you for the entire year and for years and you have to renew that every year but that will cover cover you for the entire year in terms of health insurance.
Hum.
That's all included in the $500 if you are an American citizen then the cost is only $789 now are still waiting for your permit but you have paid the deposit and if your permit is denied we will refund the deposit.
The pet deposit is your money.
So.
You have to worry about if your if your purpose denied will refund any of the Department money that you pay.
So so uh but breakdown if you're wondering uh this information also on the website if you're wondering what the breakdown of tuition per year would be that the costs that you see here are based on a maximum number of classes that you can take per year and that's how 10 courses that you can take per year so this is a breakdown of how much per year it would come to be a CMU student as you can see the question is about 12 just over 1200.
There are $12,000, and that includes the student fees in the cost. Now the books.
Like you have the cost for 2L N for any additional fees, roughly approximate that it's $2100 room and board. If you're planning on living on campus, is roughly depending on your choice of where you want to, where you want stay in terms of the on campus housing, it's roughly around $7000 a year, and that includes a meal plan and personal effects. These are things that won't be covered by the costs of the page to seeing these are personal effects like.
Two faced or or anybody in that kind of category? Or do you want to go out for a meal or?
So that's a relative so far, and then clearly health insurance. It's also all of this is on the website, so if you want to go back and review that it will be there. We do understand that.
That I'm just going to be there to the national closet. We understand that um, finances are very very big thing and it some. And what we've done this international deposit that we've put into place so that students can be ahead of time and know that, at least for the first semester, they don't have to worry about about fees or costs or anything. You can focus on.
Transitioning to a new country and meeting people and working on their studies. And so we're trying to help with the transition to studying and socializing and growing in a new country. As we do understand that that's a lot of those things will come into play when you're trying to do your best to seed an on place a new time in your life. So that's that is why we have the deposit that will you.
Uh, do you have some financial support in place now? As you can see with scholarships, the deadline for specials was February the 28th, so scopes are no longer available for the coming year. However, we do have first trees that are available.
This is granted money from donors that are applied to anybody who's in the admit or additional limits. You can apply for the history and the deadline for those groceries is made the very first anytime between now and May the 31st. If you're an admit or additional met, you can apply for a versary and those are that is based on financial need. So when you apply you can give us a breakdown of budget you're financially and be able to take that into consideration. Additionally, if you are being supported by a church.
CMU, we have a church matching grant which means that we will give up to $1000 of magic to, uh, to any student who being supported by their church. So for example, if your church give you $100, we will match the two hundreds. If your church gives you $500, we will match the $500 or church gives you $1500. We will match up to a $10 of that 1500. So add another way that you can potentially getting some financial support.
Financial support we do have on campus employment for students now there are a limited number of jobs and our log students so the jobs that you may potentially get are very limited like you said and it's also very limited amount of hours per week of 2 to 5 roughly 2 to 5 hours a week for on campus employment with a valid Canadian study permit during the academic year you can apply it to work off campus where about 20 hours week.
And this is any place where you might get. You might want to get a job.
Well you are on breaking academic school years like for example this summer to work full time so it's not like you can only work 20 hours a week for the entire year so we encourage you to broaden your horizons and look for a job that you might want my dinner off campus but we still have some on campus employment.
OK so once you have paid your your deposit I will send you information how to register and become a regular courses if you'd like to take included in that email is a Contacts are student advising student advisors and what they will do is they will help you select your horses that will help you reach your.
Um or at least a right direction on the tech courses that you need to take or would want to take so we encourage you right now because of social dancing we have set up AA system of student advising online so you get an appointment and you eat one on one with the student advisor to pick those classes and then we encouraged to register through your student portal.
So like I said once you paid your deposit I will send you information on how to register.
For you of course on your student portal.
Of.
And you just are online.
You can go you know other student portal and and can uh check things on student portal billing information will also be empty student portal anger to the gate.
Well, you met you just about said everything I needed to know.
And if you ever again and as we are going to be talking about one of one of our favorite things and that is the mandatory while the orientation we've called it mandatory implantation because it is so important for getting used to life in Canada and getting used to being a student in Canada so I'm just going to give it over to Sandra take it away.
We yeah it like Mitch said, it is my very favorite thing that we do every year is welcoming international students to our campus and to our country and to our Winnipeg City community. And so we do this twice a year. We do it in September an and in January this year because of the pandemic, I'm not sure if the September 2nd date will hold, but we will be in communication with you as we get provincial and federal government.
A public health mandates about what we can and can't do, and so just keep your eyes open for us about further communication as you plan your travel to Canada. We all know that there's travel restrictions and all of those things which might affect these dates. But we will be in touch with you. But anyway, so just to give you a sense of what you would be coming for for that mandatory orientation, we want to make sure that you know your way around campus. We want to know. So we're going to show you where the classrooms are.
If you're living on campus, getting you in a little bit early before the school year starts so that you can set up your dorm room. If you are moving to an apartment in the city, giving you a little bit of time to kind of settle in and kind of get some dishes and some pots and pans and things like that, we want to also provide you with information about what it means to study at a post secondary level in Canada, we recognize that sometimes educational systems and expectations are different.
And so we want to give you a little bit of a step up in order to understand that better so. So those are some of the topics we also want to talk about to show you around Winnipeg, do a little bit of sightseeing kind of get to know your new home.
We will help you with some of the settlement things we want to help you make sure that you can get to a bank and set up a bank account if you haven't done that already. We want to help you figure out how to use our public transportation. That's mostly bus here in Winnipeg, we have a pretty extensive bus system and so it just helping you kind of get to know that. And then maybe even helping you set up supplies for the academic year. Whether you need to go get a pillow or a blanket.
Or something like that for your for your dorm room, and so we want to kind of show you where shopping places are and things like that. Also, it's going to be. This is my favorite part is this is the opportunity for you to start making connections with future friends, future support people through student leaders. We have two groups of student leaders that help with orientation. The first is the international student mentors. They are both Canadian, an international students who want to make.
Your first experience as a first year international student. A really great one. So there there to kind of run the orientation to go places with you to kind of just be a support and they're really fantastic welcoming people. The other group is the International Student Council that is mostly international students and they plan events throughout the whole year to get you kind of like plugged into Canadian cultural events. Just doing fun social things, those kinds of things. So those are people that you'll get an opportunity to connect with right away.
And then, as I mentioned a little bit earlier, just as you keep these dates in mind as you make your travel plans, and please be paying attention to updates and alerts that Mitch and I will be sending you later in the summer as we have a better sense of what will be happening for those dates alright. And Mitch, I think we're kind of come into the end and we're ready to start answering some questions.
I.
Right, yeah?
Yeah.
Uhm, I think I noticed 1 one question already from boyfriend Sandy is is there any deadline for our transcripts? So Mitch, I'm going to ask you for that one 'cause I don't know the question and while Mitch is answering that if you have other questions, that's the only one that we've seen so far. So if you have a question, please put it in the in the chat.
Yeah, um, so basically the question about is there a deadline for transcripts? Uhm, the deadline for transcripts is the same deadline As for applications. So if you were hoping to apply for the fall, May 1st was the deadline. May 1st would have been the global effort scripts as well.
So the deadline for the January semester is the 10th, so if you hope to travel to travel here and come a student for maybe winter semester.
August the 10th will be the deadline, so it's the same deadline for transfers is as the same deadline for your applications. So if you send an application in with some transcripts at same time, that's the same.
As the deadline so at the good question, yeah, um.
I just look for the questions that have come in and.
Everything.
Yep.
I hope that this has been as informative to enter your question that you might have had or. I know that, uh, I know that a lot of us students have asked the questions ahead of time before they even done these before this web and are so.
I really hope that like I said, if you have any questions.
We have about 10 more minutes, um, that if you want to jump on with a question so, um.
Uh.
Yeah, we'll just give people a minute.
Think of this.
Yeah, I'm trying to think of general questions that people usually ask. Um, I'll say again that, uhm.

what are the housing cost, I may have missed that
Our website is the best place for.
We can with information.
With the information that you mean that you may be looking for seeing, that is where the housing costs. Uhm, that very question because the housing costs aren't so easy to nail down exactly what the housing costs are going to be. That's mainly as we have two different dormitories on campus. We have Parker Hall in conquered Hall.
Both of those dormitories have a different costs associated with the, with the cost of the rooms. We also have two different.
Well, three different places that you can get. Apartments and apartments can be anywhere between Studio Apartments. One bedroom apartments.
Sandra, do you have more to say about?
I want to say Let's not talk too much about the apartments because I will tell you right now that those are very rarely available to 1st year students. They are assigned by seniority. So the more years you live on campus, the more likely you will be to get an apartment. Almost no. First years ever get apartments.
OK.
Because there's just such a high demand for them, yeah?
Yeah, so I like most people, uhm.
Most first year students go to Parker Hall, which is a classic dormitory long hallway, usually 2 to a room with a shared bathroom. At the end of the hallway again because of COVID-19. Some of those things are possibly going to be different for next year. I know that we are committed to having.
On campus classes, if we're allowed to, and that also means that we would have open residences in the fall, but I think it would be single rooms and so then the cost would be slightly higher. If you don't have a roommate an I don't know quite where those costs this year are really complicated too.
To kind of sort through, but it is available under.
On our website I was just looking that up while we were talking. I'm sorry I just lost my place.
Um, just to kind of give you a sense though. Parker Hall.
Is.
Sorry, a single occupancy only in for this next year, so Parker Hall would be $1350 per semester.
Conquered Hall would be 1600. An $50 per semester conquered Hall is 2 rooms with a shared bathroom. So just to kind of give you a bit of a sense.
So.
And sometimes international students. They travel here with their families.
Usually in the first year they, uh, we will provide. We will provide links of where they could potentially look for uh. For apartments in Winnipeg, we give those links so that you can potentially look for a place in your first year where you might be able to.
To live off campus with your family you.
Send it.
Yeah, if you. If you're coming with family, yeah, we can provide very limited support as far as finding off campus housing for students. That's just not part of the job that we do. We have a few links to a few places, but really, that's the students responsibility. If they choose to live off campus.
My recommendation is planet to live on campus if possible your first year. There's all kinds of benefits to living on campus. First of all, you're going to brand new place. You don't have to figure out how to travel every single day. The library your professors, student life staff, Liz, lots and lots of support. Plus, there's just have built in community of people that you get to know right away. I know that obviously.
There's all kinds of reasons why people choose to live on or off campus, but I really recommend that for your first year at least. Plan to see on campus because it just makes it a lot easier as you enter a new country not to be running around a strange city trying to figure out housing.
That's just my recommendation.
Yeah, and I believe there's going to be a web and R in the future about specifically about residents. We do realize that residents is such a complicated issue in terms of like meal plans and apartments and.
Dormitories and kind of thing, so we like to, uh, to kind of separate that from a little bit of from the competition in terms of like what are your needs? In that sense, one thing that you should know is that with with dormitories there is a meal plan and our our meal services are all in House and there really focused on well balanced meal plan.
Well balanced nutritional needs and we deal also realize that there is a bit. There is quite a jump from the types of foods that you might be used to to the types of foods that are available in Canada, and we've noted that international students really do have a bit of A.
East curve that they have to get over in terms of what's available but.
If you have dietary needs, we can do our best to meet those needs.
Yeah.
First there Mitch, I'm just noticing we have about 2 minutes left and just invite any other questions from from you.
From the audience.
Yep, any.
Any last minute?
Any any further questions?

Thank you. Also, do I have to do SATs to apply/are they an added advantage?
I think another one, uh? Also do I have to do essay Tees to apply, or are they an added advantage? I'll prove that question so much. You can see that.
Uh, we don't. We will use essay Tees as part of our uh, uh, assessment process, but essay Tees aren't necessarily used by by American or Canadian. Now don't some universities, every University for different? So don't don't think I'm saying like no, nobody uses SA TS anymore. CMU doesn't necessarily use acts as part.
Of, um, so if you do an essay T and you don't do well, we will not use that as something against you in terms of applying, but if you do essay Tees and you do well, that will also be used in our assessment process. But you do not need to do essay Tees, so I don't even know there's a cost included on SA TS. But if you have done this acts, don't worry about it if you have.
Not not for CMU.
Yeah, you don't. You don't need the essay Tees for seeing you, so yeah, that is that is a popular question as well. Lots of students does 80s, but.
Yeah, it it we. We don't even. I don't even think we put, uh, our minimum safety score requirement on our website because that's how.

Do you require any English language test for foreign students
That's how, um, infrequently we use acts as an assessment process, so thanks for that question.
OK.
There's another one, uhm. I just approved it. I haven't read it, uh, do you? Do you require any English language test for foreign students?
Yes, we do require English language tests. Results for foreign students. It does depend on which country you're coming from. It also depends on how.
How long ago you might have done some English testing, so I believe if it's two years if it's over the years old, well we do require an new test. If you've done English testing and we have left like if you were primary English in your high school and you left your high school.
And it's been over three years, uh, so there's I mean there's 22 separate timelines. English tests like Ielts or toefl, or that kind of thing is a two year gap. If you're coming out of high school, there's a three year gap, depending also on your country. And as I said at the beginning of the presentation, there is a requirements page off of our site that you can check that will let you know if your country requires.
English language proficiency exams or not? Because of COVID-19, there are three additional tests that we've included on our website and that's dual lingo. The Toefl has a in home test that we've that we're using for the code 19 situation. And then there is now an ilt indicator test that you can also take, which is also an an in home test. It I'll set up.
And, Uh, I believe all of that is also on our website, so if you go to the Internet, the future student international page, they'll be links to all these different things on that page. And like I said at the beginning of the presentation, we do have a PDF document with all of these links attached to it that you will be able to read over and used to find all these links so.
We need to get him one more. One more question, if you have. If not, you can email me at emerald@cmu.ca.
And if you have any specific questions.
Ready in? Don't have any specific questions about that application? You can contact me.
So this is the only time you're gonna get to see Sandra until you, uh, until you actually, uh.

Yeah, I think the last question is specific to the person up and so Mitch maybe you can answer this to Samir offline.
OK, I can. I can do that.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah we won't. We won't be answering personal questions today about your personal situation.
Yeah.
Ask.
Yes I will.
Yeah, but Mitch, You'll take one of that question and, uh, get back to Samir at a later time. Yeah, are there any more general questions?
All right?
OK, well thank you for joining us for this webinar. Uhm, it was actually really fun to, uh, to be a part of this and I'm I hope that we answered up a lot of your questions that you may have roaming around in your brain who little too into the chat.

Thank you for the webinar, it was very helpful
No, just to call. That said, yes, we're glad that we can help. Um, thank you for the web, and R was very helpful. We're glad that it was helpful. As Mitch had mentioned earlier. I'm hoping that later in the summer, for those of you who were admitted and have done your deposit, we were going to have a little bit of an introduction to life in Canada. A little bit of things about prepping like some pre arrival stuff to think about smore specifically and so.
I look forward to connecting with those of you who are further along in the getting here process. Hopefully in a month or two.
I think so.
And like I said, we might take a little bit of time, but we do have a PDF document and I believe will be recording of this that we will be able to send out to you in just a little bit of time. So be patient with us as we get some of our.
Canonized and will send that out to you as soon as we can.
All right?
So thanks for joining us and uh.
Alright, bye.
Bye.
